Pair returns (%)

Change of row currency (base) against column currency (quote), e.g. row EUR, column USD is EUR/USD. Crosses are calculated from ECB reference rates of the same observation date and are not tradable prices.

Band widths are fixed for the 5-observation comparison. Each cell also shows the number and sign, so colour is not needed to read it.

Worked example (EUR/USD)

EUR/USD moved from 1.13670 to 1.12980, a change of −0.607%. The inverse, USD/EUR, changed +0.611%, which is not simply the negative.

Methodology and sources

Read the method, timing rules and caveats

This page uses the ECB euro foreign exchange reference rates (units of each currency per 1 euro). They are reference values published each working day around 16:00 CET, not intraday movements or tradable prices.

The basket is USD, EUR, JPY, GBP, AUD, CAD, CHF and NZD with equal weights. The value V of each currency is expressed in US dollars per unit and derived from ECB rates of the same observation date (V[USD]=1, V[EUR]=the USD rate).

Vc = rateUSD / ratec   (VUSD = 1, VEUR = rateUSD)

S[c] = 100 / 7 × Σd≠c ( ln(Vc,end / Vc,start) − ln(Vd,end / Vd,start) )

The strength index is the average log-return difference multiplied by 100, in index points; it is not a literal basket percentage return. Pair returns are true percentages from this formula:

100 × ( (Vrow,end / Vcol,end) / (Vrow,start / Vcol,start) − 1 )

Opposite cells are computed from reciprocal prices, so they are not exact negatives of each other.

A comparison uses the latest observation date with all 8 currencies and the complete observation date exactly N complete dates earlier (N = 1, 5, 20). Because holidays are skipped, this is not the same as 1 day, 1 week or 1 month. Missing dates are never filled with earlier values.

Guide for "Awaiting update" (a heuristic of this site, not an official publication calendar): FX and bond yields more than 10 calendar days after the latest observation date, policy rates more than 21 calendar days, monthly commodity prices when the reference month is 3 or more months ago. If retrieval has not succeeded for 48 hours or more, this is shown separately regardless of the observation date. Market holidays are not determined.
