Methodology and sources
Read the method, timing rules and caveats
Monthly average prices of gold (Gold, USD per troy ounce), silver (Silver, USD per troy ounce) and WTI crude oil (Crude oil, WTI, USD per barrel) from the monthly table of World Bank Commodity Price Data (The Pink Sheet). Series are checked by their column names and units.
The ratio is between monthly average prices; it is not a monthly average of daily ratios. Gold/WTI is in bbl/ozt; gold/silver is a unitless multiple. Months with a missing or non-positive denominator are not calculated.
Gold / WTI = (USD/troy oz) ÷ (USD/bbl) = bbl/ozt · Gold / Silver = (USD/troy oz) ÷ (USD/troy oz)
Only closed months (up to last month) are used; no value is created for the current month. Ratios use only the same reference month for both prices.
The price comparison sets the first month with both values to 100 and shows both lines; it does not imply causation. The line breaks at months without values; nothing is interpolated.
Guide for "Awaiting update" (a heuristic of this site, not an official publication calendar): FX and bond yields more than 10 calendar days after the latest observation date, policy rates more than 21 calendar days, monthly commodity prices when the reference month is 3 or more months ago. If retrieval has not succeeded for 48 hours or more, this is shown separately regardless of the observation date. Market holidays are not determined.
